Mountain biking in the Tunari Cordillera. Berghotel Carolina is located near one of the most scenic mountain biking routes in the Tunari Cordillera. We start 7 am, ascending the foothills of Mt. Tunari in a vehicle to the trailhead at Tahua Cruz. There we abandon motorized transport and saddle our bikes, we start at our highest point, 4,530 meters above sea level (14,862 ft a.s.l.). As we ride down the mountain trails, we overlooked by the snow-capped Mt. Pirhuata. Further down the trail we visit two crystalline mountain lakes. At the halfway point there is a lunch break within a picturesque Andean landscape, home to herds of llama y families of viscacha, a timid, native species of chinchilla. Once refueled, the trail takes us to the community of Escalerani, where the Cochabamba Valley will suddenly open up before us and we will begin the adrenaline inducing 15 km (9.3 mile) descent snaking down narrow paths to the lush village of Tikipaya at 2,700 m a.s.l. (8,858 ft a.s.l.). Here we load the bikes onto the van and head back home to Berghotel.
